18 Y.O. Man Charged With Robbery After Alleged North Bondi Catfishing Scam

An 18-year-old man has been charged with robbery after allegedly pretending to be a woman, inviting a 23-year-old man to a North Bondi home, and subsequently assaulting him for his wallet early Sunday morning.

To those allegations, we say: yeah, don’t do that.

NSW Police report the man was allegedly chased by three men upon his arrival to the premises, with the 18-year-old demanding his wallet.

After the ordeal was reported to Eastern Suburbs Local Area Command, police arrested the 18-year-old, a 20-year-old, and a 17-year-old at an address on Wairoa Avenue. All three were taken to Waverley Police Station.

After questioning, the 20-year-old and the 17-year-old were released by authorities pending further enquiries into the alleged incident. The 18-year-old was released on bail and is set to face court on Tuesday October 3.

In an initial police report, law enforcement authorities laid out a series of recommendations to avoid unsavoury first encounters from dating apps. Among the good info there: organising first meetings in public spaces, and disabling GPS functionality on certain apps so people can’t trace you.

We’d also suggest a rigorous Insta stalk to confirm their legitimacy. Stay safe out there, fam.
