Time To Embrace The Darkness, Dark Mofo Announces Epic 2018 Line-up

Yes, hello the line-up for Hobart’s Dark Mofo is out and it’s looking mighty fine.

Dark Mofo – the festival where last year nude swimmers jumped into the bloody freezing ocean as part of the Winter Solstice ritual. But really, the fest is all about exploring human nature, traditions, darkness and light, birth, death, and renewal. Hence the name.

The mid-winter fest will return this June with a program packed full of more than 700 international and local artists across multiple forms plus a promise of a few surprises.

Dark Mofo’s twitter unleashed the news just a couple of hours ago in the tweet below.

So we’re talking big-shows like the iconic Laurie Anderson, St. Vincent, Electric Wizard, Alice Glass, and Tanya Tagaq just to name a very few.

Laurie will be showing two exhibits. In “All The Things I Lost In The Flood”, Laurie will use live music, video, electronics, and the spoken word to celebrate language and stories. While in “Chalkroom”, Laurie will team up with new media artist, Hsin-Chien Huang to showcase their collaboration in virtual reality.

Fun fact: “Chalkroom” was awarded “Best VR Experience” at the 74th Venice Film Festival in 2017. No biggie.

According to the MercuryMurray and Liverpool streets in Hobart will be converted into a new multi-venue, late-night party precinct with the epic name of Night MassIn this venue alone will be more than 100 artists pulling you into the darkness.

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery will also join the fest by hosting a new exhibition called “A Journey to Freedom” among others.

Creative director Leigh Carmichael spilled the beans that the festival’s sixth line-up will be the most expensive. But with a total of 750 artists, 22 exhibitions, two opera companies, two theatre companies, one puppet theatre company, one orchestra, and a community choir, who’s really surprised?

Tickets will be up for grabs at 11am Tuesday.

The internationally acclaimed fest will run June 13-24.
