Daniel Andrews Announced VIC’s Banning Single-Use Plastic Bags ASAP

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced that his state will be the latest to ban supermarket plastic bags, meaning our mates in Melbourne and beyond will have to find something else to stuff the cupboard below the sink with.

Andrews announced the move on The Project, which has gotten behind the #BanTheBag campaign in a pretty big way. It was even the subject of one of Waleed‘s famous addresses, which are some of the most demonstrably powerful pieces of rhetoric in the country, if measured by their legislative impact.

“We are going to get this done as quickly as we can and I think that only leaves one or two other states,” Andrews said on the show.

According to the Herald Sun, the ban will be implemented after consultation with business and community groups, and probably won’t include the smaller bags you put your apples in. You know, the ones you humiliate yourself trying to work out which end is which because they’re all stuck together and weird.

Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio issued a statement supporting the move:

We’re banning single-use plastic bags will slash waste, reduce litter and help protect marine life in Victoria’s pristine waters.

We will work closely with Victorian communities and businesses to design the ban, we’re proud that we’re doing our bit to reduce the impact plastic bags have on our environment.

Whether or not you’re massively pissed off about this move for some reason, your precious plastic bags are going the way of the dodo anyway. In July, both Woolworths and Coles announced that they’re phasing out single use bags anyway. And we all know the situation at Aldi.

New South Wales is a major holdout to the national move to bin the bag. When’s Gladys gonna do it?
