Yesterday marked the second day of court for the high-profile ‘Tinder’ balcony fatality in Queensland, which accuses Gable Tostee of murdering 26-year-old New Zealand woman Warriena Wright, who he met via dating app Tinder in August 2014.
Warriena Wright fell from the balcony of Tostee’s 14th story Gold Coast apartment, after allegedly being locked out there and attempting to climb to another balcony to escape him. The 30-year-old carpet layer has pleaded not guilty to the murder.
Audio recorded on Tostee‘s phone, as well as six selfies of the two have been tendered to the Brisbane Supreme Court.
In most of the selfies, Wright is smiling and happy, but she looks scared and/or upset in one (last pictured). Authorities say they were taken a very, very short time before her death.
Witnesses have also given their accounts; resident of the Gold Coast building Nick Casey (who lives on the 12th floor) says he saw Wright dangling from Tostee‘s balcony, sand says he tried to yell at her to climb back over.
“I heard her say, ‘I want to go home’, I heard her say, ‘help’ and at that point I said to her, ‘go back inside’ and it wasn’t long after that she fell. She fell straight past where I was standing on the balcony and ricocheted off a few balconies below us and kept going to the ground.”
The harrowing audio from Tostee’s phone has been played over two days of the case being in court. Prosecutors say it is key evidence in the case against him, and defence say it shows his actions were in self-defence.
The audio shows Wright was drunk and slurring her words, and became violent towards Tostee. It shows him becoming increasingly aggressive towards her as she pleads to go home:
Wright can be heard emitting chilling screams, yelling “no, no, no” before being forced out onto the balcony, and you hear a door closing. Seconds later, there is silence from Wright, with only the sound of Tostee breathing.
From the ABC, here is a transcript of quotes from the audio:

Tostee: “Shit.”2:22am Tostee: “Where the fuck are my keys?”
Shortly after, there is audio of Tostee calling his father and asking for help:
“Hello dad, I might have a bit of a situation. I met up with a girl for a date … she started getting really aggressive. We had sex in bed and then after that she kept drinking.”
He goes on to explain that he and Wright had both been drunk, that she kept beating him up and that he forced her onto the balcony.
“I think she might’ve jumped off … there’s like a million cops.I’m fucked, I don’t know what to do. I didn’t cause this, I didn’t push her or anything.”
The case is ongoing, and will resume today in the Brisbane Supreme Court.
