SA Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi has finally won his slog of a battle to secure a major six-month inquiry into the food certification industries.
Despite stating that halal would not be the only certification investigated, Bernardi has in the past expressed concern about where money from the Halal certification “ends up.” And regarding the investigation, he has said that he would be looking into whether the public is given enough insight into certifiers’ financial records.
The inquiry will also be looking into labelling requirements, certification fees paid by food producers, and “whether current schemes provide enough information for Australian consumers to make informed purchasing decisions”.
While the Labor party and the Greens voted against the investigation going ahead, the motion ended up passing 34 – 30.
Bernardi says he just wants the truth:
“I keep getting told any number of things about certification schemes and I don’t know what’s true and what’s not true, so I want to establish the facts.”
Well, ABC Fact Check did this a few months ago, and found that Halal certification does not fund terrorism (surprising, I know), but you go ahead and do your thing there Cory.
