City Of Sydney To Offer Same-Sex Couples Free Weddings Once It’s Legalised

Good news for us gays has been few and far between lately, with the seemingly interminable same-sex marriage postal survey constantly finding new and innovative ways to make us feel like shit, so HOLY GOD is it nice to find a bit of feel-good news amidst all the garbage.

Praise be to the City of Sydney council who tonight passed a motion allowing free hire of community facilities, halls and parks to same-sex couples seeking to use them for marriage celebrations, within the first 100 days of marriage equality law being passed.

The extremely lovely gesture follows the council’s ongoing support for the ‘Yes’ vote, which included numerous banners throughout the city supporting marriage equality.

*gay joy increases*

The free hire will not be offered to heterosexuals getting married (SUCKED IN HETEROS), however the council has assured the straighties that any pre-existing bookings will not be impacted.

Queers getting hitched will also need to pay for their own audio visual, catering and security services, which is fine as we wouldn’t trust basic music offerings for our lit af weddings anyway tbh.

The motion passed with the support of Lord Mayor Clover Moore, however Liberal councillor Christine Forster, herself in a long-term relationship with her same-sex partner, voted against it.

Councillor Linda Scott, who moved the motion, notes on how it is a small way to give support to marginalised same-sex couples:

This community has suffered significant discrimination and many have felt hurt during the campaign. This is a practical way for the council to combat discrimination.

Righto then, who out there wants to gay marry the hell out of me at Paddington Town Hall for free next March?
