Case Of Missing Belgian Backpacker Theo Hayez Formally Referred To NSW Coroner

The case of missing Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez, last seen in May at a Byron Bay nightclub, has formally been referred to the NSW coroner.

The 18-year-old’s disappearance prompted a huge air and land search operation across Byron Bay, with only a hat similar to the one he was last seen wearing found in bushland near Tallow Beach.

The ABC reports that tests on the hat did not produce a DNA match.

In August, groups of volunteers brought cadaver dogs to the area after police initially suspended the official search in July.

On Monday, a police spokesperson confirmed that the search had come to an end.

“The family wish to thank the public and the community volunteers for their ongoing support,” said a statement. “They have requested their privacy at this time.”

A vigil was held at Clarke’s Beach on Sunday evening – the Looking For Théo Hayez Facebook page thanked all those who attended.

Another post on the page made on Monday afternoon welcomed the case being referred to the coroner, saying it would offer “much-needed expertise, insight, and a fresh perspective.”

“Now, more than ever, we need to stay united as we embark on this new chapter – a step closer to finding Théo.”
