To my friends in Sydney, my heartfelt condolences. You’ve just suffered through the second-hottest day on record.
Yep, the mercury got almost all the way to fucken 50C in parts of the city today, with Penrith clocking a whopping 47.3C at the worst part of the day. Richmond and Campbelltown clocked 46.3C and 44.6C respectively, and Observatory Hill in Sydney recorded 43.4C.
The only hotter day on record was in 1939, when Richmond reached the shocking high of 47.8C – at least we’ve got air-conditioned malls these days. Pray for our 1930s ancestors who had to suffer through this bullshit in neck-to-knee swimsuits.
#SydneyHeat: Sorry, in our earlier checks we missed a 47.8 degrees C temperature recorded at an old #Richmond station (now closed) in 1939. 47.3 today still beats the previous #Penrith record.

Still, approximately no-one is stoked about the near-record breaking heat ruining everyone’s weekends.

At least we got some cute animal content out of it.

Even the otters at Taronga Zoo were feeling hotter … they were fed some prawn ice blocks while 8yo Fergus the hippo preferred a carrot confection. Pics: ABC News / Emily Laurence #SydneyHeatwave pic.twitter.com/Lh1Wt5hZ1m

One downside of living in the air-conditioned future: an over-demand on the power grid meant that 3000 homes throughout Sydney lost power, meaning that a bunch of people were slumming it ’30s style through a day that’d make Satan’s ballsack look like a pair of red, wrinkly ice cubes. Sorry, guys.
