‘Broad City’ Had To Rewrite Most Of S4 Because *Someone* Lost The Election

Political change doesn’t just affect the very real world, it affects fictional worlds as well. So when you’re writing a TV show and you’re faced with a pretty important looming election, you’ve kinda gotta take a wee little gamble on the result. Particularly if your show deals with politics in any way, shape, or fashion.
Would you believe that the ‘Broad City‘ gang was absolutely dead certain that by the time their long-awaited fourth season went to air, they’d be living in an America governed by President Hillary Rodham Clinton?
We know. Shocker.
Ilana Glazer and Abby Jacobson even went so far as to have then-campaigning HRC on the show in a season three episode that aired in March of last year, which featured Ilana briefly signing up to campaign for Clinton, right up until the point she discovered the role would be unpaid.
So when Glazer and Jacobson sat down to write season four, they were pretty dang confident about President Clinton being a thing. As we all know now, that assumption was horrifyingly wrong.
Speaking to USA Today, Glazer confirmed that when a certain shrivelled orange testicle swept to power instead of Hillary, a bunch of re-writing had to be done.
Like, a lot.
As in, a significant chunk of the entire season.

“We wrote (Season 4) being like, ‘Here we go! Hillary for president!’ [But when] this game-show host became president of our country, we rewrote a lot.”

As an example, Glazer cites an episode recently aired at the San Francisco Colossal Clusterfest earlier this month. The episode deals with the comedic concept that “a witch is really just a woman who’s in touch with her womanhood.” After Ole’ Tiny Hands’ victory, it needed tinkering:

“Ilana’s ‘powers’ are decreasing during the current administration because it’s just so hard to (orgasm) when you know so many people are in such danger. So Ilana works through her Trump-related (hang-up) and it’s wild.”

Curiously, the show is also committed to existing in a Trump world whilst not acknowledging it: every utterance of the word “Trump” this season is reportedly going to be deliberately bleeped. It’s a uh… look, it’s a move. That’s probably enough.

Season 4 of ‘Broad City‘ is scheduled to begin airing from August 23rd.
