While Britney’s Dad Agreed To Exit The Conservatorship, Here’s Why It’s Not An Immediate Thing

jamie spears conservatorship exit

The huge news this morning that Britney Spears‘ father Jamie Spears agreed to step back from his role in the conservatorship is really a landmark moment in the popstar’s ongoing tussle with who’s taking care of her, as well as her finances and estate.

Although court documents submitted by Jamie’s attorney Vivian Lee Thoreen on Thursday said he would move away from being in control of his 39-year-old daughter’s assets and financial decisions, it’s not a move that’s effective immediately.

In the documents, Jamie stipulated that he will “work with the court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare an orderly transition to a new conservator”, and has expressed that he’ll only step back once all matters currently before the courts are resolved. His filed documents then asks the court to encourage “all interested parties” to meet and work out these matters in Britney’s “best interests”.

“Mr. Spears is willing to step down when the time is right, but the transition needs to be orderly and include a resolution of matters pending before the Court,” the court filing read.

“In order to reach that result, the Court should encourage all interested parties to meet and confer in order to resolve those pending matters in the best interests of Ms. Spears.”

So what does this mean? Well Jamie’s definitely (begrudgingly) willing to move away from being Britney’s financial conservator, but only when “the time is right” – and seemingly when he feels it’s time to transition to a new conservator.

It’s definitely important to note that this is the very first time in the 13-year conservatorship that Jamie has gone on the record to say he’s willing to relinquish his role in Britney’s situation.

Even though it’s not something that’s effective immediately, and he’s still trying to make everything happen on his terms with the stipulation that he’ll only leave when the time is “right” (To whose standards? His? Britney’s? The courts?), it’s a huge step forward for Britney and her newly-chosen lawyer, Mathew Rosengart.

Though there’s no confirmed reason as to why Jamie is suddenly happy to give up his place as the one in control of Britney’s extensive estate (reportedly worth around $81m AUD), there’s a couple of things happening in the wider Britney Spears universe that potentially could have influenced his decision.

First is the fact that Britney was finally allowed to choose her own lawyer, instead of having one given to her. Her last attorney Sam Ingham was her court-appointed lawyer since the conservatorship began in 2008. After Britney gave a speech to the court in June, Ingham decided to step down and she was then allowed to choose her own representation.

Since then, the #FreeBritney movement has also pushed for a total boycott of the “Britney brand”, meaning they won’t stream her music, buy her merchandise, her perfumes, nothing.

“The moment we saw those documents, the diehard Free Britney advocates, we started putting it out there on social media,” #FreeBritney movement member Jared Lipscomb told Vice.

“Do not consume the music. Do not consume the product. Do not consume anything from Britney the brand.”

Whether this, along with Britney refusing to perform while Jamie is part of her conservatorship, was a financial reason for Jamie deciding to step back in unclear, but the evidence does seem to stack up.

And, as always, FREE BRITNEY.
