Brissy’s Cub Sport Talk Coming Out As “Proud Gay People” W/ Single ‘O Lord’

Brisbane band Cub Sport have been killin’ it in the past couple of years. Their 2016 debut album ‘This Is Our Vice‘ is certified fire, scoring them a top-25 Hottest 100 slot this year and a bunch of sold-out tours.
Now they’ve released the first track from their second record, and it’s some gorgeous shit. ‘O Lord‘ is a harmony-drenched, intimate love letter to that breathtaking, fragile happiness that comes with getting the thing you really, really wanted.
It’s made all the deeper by the fact that singer Tim Nelson wrote the song after coming out in 2016, along with bandmate and partner Sam Netterfield

Tim and Sam spoke to PEDESTRIAN.TV about the story behind the song, saying that their choice to come out had a broader effect on their creativity as well:

“I feel like everything makes a lot more sense now,” Sam told us. “Without really realising exactly where we stood and how we felt, it was hard for us to get behind ourselves fully. It’s hard to articulate, but it feels like a lot of things fell into place.”

Tim added, “Being true to ourselves has really opened us up creatively, because there’s no shame or internalised homophobia and self-loathing. We’re finally free to just express ourselves in the way that we want to, and try to be like, proud gay people.
Both guys say they’ve been inspired by other LGBTQIA musicians like Grizzly Bear‘s Ed Droste, and they’re now in the “incredibly rewarding” position of being able to inspire others:

“We get messages and snapchats and stuff almost every day, from people just thanking us for doing what we’re doing. It’s incredibly rewarding knowing that we’re helping people love themselves.”
The band are in the process of shooting a clip for ‘O Lord’ now, and if their Instas are anything to go by, it’s going to be as bloody beaut as the song. In the meantime, we wish them all the best in their quest to continue “making Brisbane gay“. Lord knows we need it.
