Bondi Rescue Team Try & Fail To Save Dolphin Who Beached Itself Over W/E

Oh man. Poor lil’ dolphin.

An injured dolphin washed up on Bondi Beach on Saturday but lifeguards were unable to save it. Bondi Rescue lifeguards posted on their various social media channels that the lil fella washed up on the beach late Saturday afternoon three or four times times, with lifeguards and members of the public trying to help it back into the water each time before it passed away.

“We have a lot of dolphins come into the bay at Bondi,” Bruce “Hoppo” Hopkins told the Sydney Morning Herald. “It’s always great watching them going around the surfers and catching the waves. We thought this one was just catching waves and coming in, until it got right up on the sand bank in the shallows and charged up the beach and beached itself.”

In a video he posted to Instagram, you can see very visible cuts to the dolphin.

Hopkins said that each time they helped the dolphin back out, they tried to keep the it submerged and as calm as possible.

“Then it just stopped moving and passed away. It was upsetting for the lifeguards, nobody likes to see such a beautiful animal pass away.”

He told The Sunday Telegraph that the last time he’d seen this happen was probably 10 years ago. The dolphin’s body has now been taken to Taronga Zoo for testing.

Rest in peace lil’ guy.
