The Des Moines Register reports that a contractor cleaning out the site of the No Frills supermarket in Council Bluffs, Iowa made the grisly discovery on January 24, with police today confirming that the remains are that of Larry Ely Murillo-Moncada, a 25-year-old No Frills employee who was last seen on November 28, 2009.

According to the Des Moines Register, the body was identified by matching DNA to that taken from Murillo-Moncada’s parents. Police say that he became upset and ran out of his parents’ home on November 28, 2009 and they reported him missing soon after.

It’s believed Murillo-Moncada went to the store even though he wasn’t rostered on at the time, climbed up on top of the cooler and fell down the 45cm gap between the wall and the back of the freezer, becoming trapped. Former No Frills employees told police it was quite common for employees to be on top of the coolers, as the area was used for storage.

With the freezer unit measuring over 3.5 metres high, he wouldn’t have been easily able to climb out of the gap, and Sgt Brandon Danielson of the Council Bluffs Police Department explained that the units were also noisy enough to drown out any calls for help. “It’s so loud, there’s probably no way anyone heard him,” Danielson told the Des Moines Register.

The No Frills supermarket had been closed for about 3 years when the remains were discovered. Police have ruled Murillo-Moncada’s death as accidental.
