The body of a man found on a beach near Rio Di Janeiro last week has been identified as missing backpacker Rye Hunt.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop delivered the news, saying Brazilian authorities confirmed the body is that of the 25-year-old Tasmanian.
Bishop said “we will continue to work with the family, providing whatever support we can within our consular responsibilities, and we’ll continue to work with the Brazilian authorities to determine how this death came about.”
Hunt is believed to have taken potent hallucinogen NBOMe prior to his disappearance on May 21.
Unconfirmed reports claim Hunt was spotted on an uninhabited island several kilometres from the coastline, days after he was last seen at a Copacabana Beach apartment.
Hunt’s sister Romany Brodribb said “thinking about life without him is unfathomable. He will be very missed by us all.”
