Blogster Awards Tech, Media & Design Finalists: App Lovin’

Apps, they make our world go round.. Whether it be an app that teaches you how to kiss, a sandwich tossing app, or an app to keep track of whose shout it is – there literally is an app for everything. We asked our 2013 Ultrabook Blogster Awards Tech, Design and Media finalists (paired with Desktop Magazine) to screenshot their smartphones and tell us exactly what apps they’re currently lovin’.

Vimeo: Unplug the TV and glue both eyeballs to this. A YouTube alternative focussed on quality (sans cats in shark suits).
Shazam:
The awkwardness of thrusting your phone in the air like the statue of
liberty is far outweighed by discovering new tunes.
Hurley Surf: A constant and depressing reminder of the what you’re missing out there.
Beanhunter: Magical homing beacon when the craving to wrap y’chops around a quality latte arises.
Vine: Twitter for video, similarly brain-numbing/genius in equal measure.
Vyclone: Collaborative crowdsourced multi-camera video mayhem.
Triggertrap: Remote control for DSLRs.
smapp: The Bible for DOPs.
GoPro: Beats punching the same little button till y’thumb bleeds to navigate the interface.
Pinterest: Ongoing distraction for imagery bowerbirds.
Note: Push your musings to pretty much anywhere.
Daytum: Data tracking for your daily nothings.
HeyTell: Converts an $800 phone to a $50 walkie talkie.

Remember those iPhone ads promising that whatever you’re looking for, “there’s an app for that”? Well good news: if you’re looking for mundane sexual encounters with subpar people, these are our faves.
Grindr: Numero Uno and most people’s first foray into ironically fruitless sexting. Got pics?
Scruff: For when you need a bit of rug to rub.
Tinder: So simple you may develop an overzealous Tinder finger and accidentally swipe away the man of your dreams. Also: designed for straight people and therefore a one way route to curious Carls and bisexual Bens.
Recon: Shh. Look it up.
Brenda: In general, lesbians are better people than gay men and therefore their dating apps kinda suck.

I don’t really go crazy on all the *cool* new apps. I keep it simple stupid.
Line One: Bizniz time
Line Two: Second Life.
Line Three: Procrastination. Words with Friends should really be called Words with Mum. The new way to interact with your parents. *Reminded me, it’s my go.
Realestate.com to look at dream homes, Bubble Wrap to pacify realising i can’t afford said home.
Line Four: The Golden Sans Projects’ ‘go to’ apps. Photos – Image Library / Instagram – Posting Live / JJJ – Listen to when walking the streets / Maps – where the fuck am I.
Bottom line is a harsh realisation i should prob answer calls and open emails.

Hello, I’m Jack Cola from JackCola.org and this is inside my Samsung Galaxy S4. This is my home screen with my most used applications. First up, I have Google Now which I use quite a bit for finding out the weather, setting my alarm and reminders, getting directions and more. It’s very accurate and saves a lot of time – but can be embarrassing when in public using it in public places. I then have quick links to Facebook, my personal and website emails, flash light (very useful), maps, camera and Skype. The watchON app is awesome – having a TV guide and remote in your pocket is so handy, because finding the remote down the side of the couch can be hard. I love S Health, and I use it as a pedometer all the time – one of the best features I like about the GS4. I’m also addicted to The Simpsons Tapped Out – it’s the first thing I do in the morning, and last thing I do at night.

My mobile is practically the physical manifestation of my mind; except in a compact Steve Jobs approved design with processing skills far beyond the capability of my actual brain. In sum, my phone is to my mind, what Sarah Jackson was to my 10-year-old self; the prettier, smarter, slimmer, more socially apt friend I always aspired to be, (sigh). Seeing as though I can’t have it all I make sure my mobile does, here are the top apps trending on my second-brain:

  • Evernote catches all my most erratic ideas. Perfect for scribbling down bits of nonsense that make no sense to anyone else but myself. A consummate companion for the creative.
  • Instagram: An obvious choice but I strongly believe this app generally is never utilized to its greatest functionality. Unfollow all your friends and replace them with artists you love who will feed your eye with images that are different instead of the same-same media it’s forced to consume everyday.
  • Trello: It is the publishing planner on the wall of my office, except in digital form. If it were actually a part of my brain it would be my frontal lobe.
  • Kaleido Lens because it’s simple, interactive visual fun. Besides, there’s nothing like looking through the lens of a kaleidoscope to remind one’s self that perspective is everything. Always. (Above image is a screenshot example of some of my Kaleido Lens fun!)

My phone is a sporting/social media Mecca, with apps to keep me updated with sports from around the world! Whether it’s American, European and here at home I’m across all the action thanks to my iPhone! Running a blog about an international sport means being able to keep up to date even in unusual hours! Apps like Twitter and Facebook also help us not only cover sports, but help us connect and share our content with fans and readers as well. Connectivity is so important, and with the iPhone and accompanying apps, we’re able to provide quality information for readers, as well as be involved in the game we love 24 hours a day.

Really it’s not about my favourite app. I mean, of course I love sticking cat heads over all my unsuspecting mates, or drinking from a virtual beer, but what’s really on display when you stare at my screen is a touch of colour organised OCD. Apps organised by colour. I even had to buy a few extra to fill out the orange folder. Now, back to splitting my skittles into colour piles.

ListerVision makes a super fast slideshow of your photos… apparently. I can’t get it to work. But I don’t care. Just thinking about a Lister brand slideshow app gives me a zen feeling like when reading a coffee table book of useless Japanese ‘Chindogu’ inventions. Another app that has this brilliant uselessness is Lou Reed’s senior friendly large font address book LouZoom. WTF Lou? Lou’s too deaf to hear us and he doesn’t give a fuck anyway, neither does Lister. They’re too busy doing awesome things. Apps suck, get off the internet, do something awesome and humble-brag ‘gram away.

What did we do in a world before apps? Conversations across the globe are made more fun (Snapchat, Facebook & Twitter), our lives easier when getting from A – B (Google Maps & SkyScanner), information (IMDb & MailOnline) and dates (Tinder, shhh!) are available at the touch of a button. One of my favourite apps however is my CocoPPa app which allows me to personalise my phone. I have never liked to be the same as everyone else, so this helps my iPhone stand out from the crowd! I have over 50 apps and I love every one of them!
