Convicted sex offender and disgraced cardinal George Pell is attempting to launch another appeal against his sentence, with his legal team lodging an application seeking leave to appeal with the High Court.

As the Guardian is reporting, the High Court confirmed today that it received the application, which needed to be filed within 28 days of the August 21 decision that saw his last challenge overturned.

The special leave application alone doesn’t necessarily mean that Pell will be allowed to appeal his case, whether or not it goes forward will be determined by a panel of justices.

Pell was convicted of two historic child sex abuse offences last year, receiving a six-year jail sentence with a non-parole period of three years and eight months.
