Ben & Jerry’s Ban 2 Scoops Of Same Flavour ‘Til SSM Is Finally Legal

Popular ice cream overlords Ben & Jerry’s have today announced that they will be pushing for marriage equality through the only way they reckon people will listen – their stomachs.

They’re now enforcing that their 26 Australian stores ban customers from purchasing two scoops of the same flavour, in an attempt to raise awareness of just how unfair the current marriage laws are.

“Imagine heading down to your local Scoop Shop to order your favourite two scoops of Cookie Dough in a waffle cone. But you find out you are not allowed – Ben & Jerry’s has banned two scoops of the same flavor. You’d be furious!” Ben & Jerry’s have said in a statement.

“But this doesn’t even begin to compare to how furious you would be if you were told you were not allowed to marry the person you love. So we are banning two scoops of the same flavor and encouraging our fans to contact their MPs to tell them that the time has come – make same sex marriage legal!”

Each store in Aus will also have a rainbow post-box and postcards for customers to fill out, which will be sent to the store’s local Members of Parliament before the parliamentary sitting on June 13. (The last one before the budget is announced.)

Ben & Jerry’s have also linked through to an Equality Campaign petition on their Twitter, allowing people who can’t physically get to a store to still put their name down in the push for marriage equality.

It’s not particularly unusual for Ben & Jerry’s to be throwing their weight behind marriage equality – the company does quite a bit of activism as well as making v tasty ice cream. On their site, the company goes into detail on how they also actively work on a range of other issues and causes.
The campaign is the latest move for the company’s continuous support of the global LGBTQI community.
