Australia’s answer to The Selby

Although we’re pretty much on par in terms of being fatties, there are some things that Aussies can simply do better than the Yanks. Most notably: Kath and Kim, cricket, Miss Universe pageants, football, (without the need for head-wear); and since the talented Paul Barbera came along, even interior photography. His series “Where They Create,” a beautiful documentation of the work spaces and studios of various creative types around the world, has meant that he’s been compared to American ‘it’ photographer Todd Selby.

Whilst the individuals Barbera tends to shoot aren’t typically household names, the level of intrigue in seeing where people work and what they choose to surround themselves with, still remains the same.

Barbera’s now back to his base in Australia, after living in Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Singapore and Rome, with his photography featured in publications like Elle Decor and Vogue Living. It is, however, his voyeuristic series “Where They Create” which has really struck a cord with a society of peeping toms.

It’s always good, clean, fun to see into other peoples lives, particularly when the photography itself is as quality as the subject matter. Barbera has shot, amongst many others, the studios of Australia’s own Alpha 60 label, and graphic designers like Tin and Ed, and although he may have big Selby shoes to fill, his is a talent that speaks for itself. I could spend hours perusing other peoples spaces. Wow, that sounds dirty.

Get inspired….
