Australian Passports Now Recognise Gender ‘X’

You know what? Every now and then the ordinarily disappointing Australian Government just throws us a bone to remind us we’re living in pretty progressive times.

The government has revealed new guidelines for Australian passports whereby a new gender option ‘X’ or ‘indeterminate’ will be available to prevent discrimination based on gender identity.

Previously, transgender and genetically ambiguous citizens had to list the gender that appeared on their birth certificate – a pretty shitty situation for a person who might live every day as a woman but whose official documentation says they’re a man.

Kevin Rudd said: “This amendment makes life easier and significantly reduces the administrative burden for sex and gender diverse people who want a passport that reflects their gender and physical appearance.”

Good job, Australia! This gives us hope that, one day, the jungle community will stop discriminating against Ferns because of their asexual reproductive spores.
