Millions of workers are now eligible to take 2 weeks’ unpaid leave if they are unable to work amid the coronavirus pandemic (be it from quarantining, self-isolating and the like). This applies to retail, hospo, and a large majority of the major awards.
Under these new ‘pandemic leave’ entitlements, eligible employees can also take “twice the amount of their accrued annual leave at half pay”, the FairWork Commission reports.
These new agreements will apply to roughly 2 million Aussie workers.
Christian Porter, the Minister for Industrial Relations, spoke to Parliament House in Canberra this afternoon about the arrival of ‘pandemic leave’, effective immediately.
“You can see how those common-sense changes would allow the flexibility in a number of businesses, where flexibility could well make the difference between survival of the business and preservation of the jobs or the failure of the business and the loss of the jobs,” he said, via 9NEWS.
“It’s probably fair to say that there has been the type of change in three weeks inside the award system that you might otherwise wait 30 years to see.”
“It is meant to last for as long as the crisis lasts,” he added, speaking of the reform.
