Look, as far as excuses for not climbing Everest go, saying that you’ve got a precious tiny proto-baby gooping itself together in your guts (sorry for the dense, scientifically accurate medical talk) is a pretty good one.
For engineer, athlete and bloody legend Turia Pitt, it also happens to be true. Pitt announced on ‘60 Minutes‘ last night that her and her fiancé Michael Hoskin are expecting themselves a bub, having found out only days before they were meant to head off to Nepal to start the extremely hectic 12-day trek to Mount Everest Base Camp.

Pitt had decided to take a pregnancy test because she had been feeling unusually tired and said on the show was that her first reaction to it was just “Fuck.“, telling Hoskin by leaving the test in the bathroom while he was brushing his teeth:
“I had a mouthful of toothpaste. I couldn’t really say much but I knew what was going on and I was just – I was like wow I can’t believe it!”
Pitt said she was reluctant to cancel the trek, as it was for the burn survivor charity Interplast, but said that she had to make decisions for two now:
“I wanted to do the walk, and then I thought about it and you know it’s not just myself I have to think about and Everest Base Camp there’s high altitude, low oxygen, not much sanitation and if something happens to you it’s really hard to get to a medical facility.”
She has done extensive work with Interplast since she recovered from severe burns sustained during a 100km marathon in the Kimberley region, during which she and a number of other runners became trapped in a grass fire.
Hoskin says they know it’ll be challenging but they’re still stoked as:
“We’ve been through something pretty traumatic and I mean we’re past that now – and you forget how hard that was so I reckon this will be more fun.”
Pitt says she’s grateful that they get to do this:
“It makes me stoked I’m still here. Not every woman in the world gets to experience this and I get to with my best friend, my partner.”
The tiny little angel is due in December.
