ATTN Melbourne & Adelaide: It’s Gonna Be Really Fucking Hot This Weekend

Look, we know it’s bloody Summer and hot weather is to be expected. But the forecast for the weekend ahead is even making meteorologists wrinkle their brows a bit.

Melbourne and Adelaide are about to get pounded by an unusual heatwave – one that’s even odd by summer standards.
For the Victorian capital, the mercury is set to tip 35 degrees today, with the forecast calling for 36 tomorrow, and a whopping 39 on Saturday. Many parts of inland Victoria are set to be even hotter, with a swathe of regional centres staring down the barrel of a 40+ degree Saturday afternoon.
Compare that to the same three days last year and the difference is stark – December 16, 17, and 18 last year copped decidedly more comfortable temperatures of 32, 22, and 25.
Meanwhile in South Australia, Adelaide is getting an almighty hammering from Mr. Sun.
After a recorded high of 41.1 at around 3pm yesterday, the temperature is again soaring – currently sitting at 41.8. With expected tops of 41 and 42 forecast for Friday and Saturday, that would make the first time in recorded history that the city has borne the brunt of four consecutive 40+ degree days in December.
And, in fact, it’s the earliest run of extreme heat for any recorded summer in Adelaide – easily eclipsing the previous mark set over January 3-6 way back in 1906.
Worryingly, the forecast in Victoria also calls for high winds on Saturday, making for extremely dangerous fire conditions – particularly in the west of the state. The state’s Fire Service and CFS are both on high alert.
The unusual heatwave is not a result of the gargantuan El Nino that will dominate our weather patterns this summer. Rather, a stubborn, slow-moving high pressure system hovering over the Tasman Sea to the east of Australia is causing all the trouble – and was the main cause of yesterday’s hectic storm activity in Sydney.
A cool change is expected to blow through South Australia on Sunday, reaching Victoria and Melbourne by Sunday evening.
Consider putting a bowl of ice water out for your feathered and furry native pals, friends. And grab yourself a prime spot in front of the fan. It’s gonna be a sweaty one.
