Popular YouTube couple, Megan Turney and Gavin Free, had no choice but to hide in their closet and call 911 as their house was invaded by an armed fan on the 26th of January.
The man, identified as Christopher Giles, drove 11 hours from New Mexico to the couple’s Austin home with a handgun, waking them as he broke glass to enter the house at around 3:40am and fire “at least one round inside” the premises. He was shot dead by police in the pair’s driveway less than 10 minutes later.
Giles was described as “single, lonely and disturbed” by police, who found a number of notes on his phone suggesting he had “developed a fondness” for Turney, and a dislike of her boyfriend, Free.
“A search of Giles’ cellular phone identified various notations identifying Megan Turney and Gavin Free by name,” the filed court documents read. “Furthermore, threatening thoughts were recorded by Giles and directed toward Gavin Free, i.e., ‘I want Gavin Free to die alone, with no children.’”
After searching the home for Turney and Free, the intruder returned to his car and attempted to drive away, but was apprehended by two Austin police officers who ordered him to stop.
Giles fired his gun at the officers, at which point Officer Matthew Jackson returned fire, hitting the suspect who died at the scene. Luckily, neither the couple or attending police were injured.
A search of Giles home and electronic equipment revealed that he was “an avid player of video games and was known for watching YouTube videos that were centred on his hobby,” according to detectives. They believe “evidence related to the planned burglary and homicides of Megan Turney and Gavin Free will be found”.
The pair has told fans they’ve had a pretty rough couple of weeks, but thank them for their support.
