This App Lets You Find Where To Buy Café Food For Cheap & Prevent Food Waste

ICYMI, the food waste situation here in Australia (and the world, if we’re honest, but let’s just talk about home for now) is dire. Food waste costs the Australian economy around $20 billion (yep, that’s with a B) every single year. That equates to about 7.3 million tonnes of food, which is 300 kilos per person or about one in five bags of groceries bought.

Honestly, we can all do better. When you consider that one-third of the world’s food is wasted (!!) and it accounts for eight percent of the world’s global greenhouse emissions (five percent of Australia’s), it’s actually more the case of us needing to do better. And stat.

But that’s a steep hill and it’s one that is pretty hard to climb in one fell swoop. Besides using up all our leftovers, doing regular fridge dives for dinner before hitting up the supermarket, or literally just buying less food, there’s a cute little app you can use to take it to the next level. Enter: Bring Me Home.

Bring Me Home is an app that looks a little like any other food app you already use, but it’s very different. Bring Me Home has partnered with cafés, bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores to help them reduce their daily food waste by selling unsold food every afternoon with discounts up to 70%, thus reducing the amount of food thrown out at the end of the day.

Basically, you just download the app, search for the type of food you’d normally buy (remember, we’re not adding to the food we fill our cupboards with), and then pick it up from the local vendor during a specific pick-up time window.

A couple of common food choices are sushi, Vietnamese rice paper rolls, and bakery goodies but as the app spreads its wings, there’ll only be more options available (in addition to the already delicious selection). Think Roll’d for $5 (instead of the usual $13), Sydney’s Donut Papi (six-packs of doughnuts that usually cost $35 go for $9.90 on the app), and Melbourne’s Moroccan Soup Bar (veggie dishes are $6.50, down from $12.50).

So far, Bring Me Home is up and running in Sydney and Melbourne, but it’s also just launched in Brisbane, too. You can also score $20 to blow on the app if you refer your favourite local food spots to download the app. So, if your local cafe or bakery could do with some help in reducing their food waste, we suggest you let them know, ASAP.
