Remember Stop Kony? The insanely viral video which implored the world to do something to stop Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony? The campaign which instantly ran out of steam when the man behind it all, Invisible Children co-founder Jason Russell, went on some kind of nude wank rampage?
Well, despite the fact everyone promptly forgot about the campaign, Kony is very much still at large – though has army has shrunk dramatically. So dramatically, in fact, that both the United States and Uganda have called off the hunt, more or less convinced that he no longer poses a real threat.
Regardless, another batshit Kony-adjacent yarn has wormed its way out of the woodwork. According to a report in The Sunday Times, there was at one point a plot afoot to capture Kony by using Angelina Jolie as a honeypot.
Yes. Apparently, Moreno Ocampo, the former chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court, has a thing for harebrained celebrity schemes.
“Forget other celebrities, she is the one,” Ocampo wrote in an e-mail. “She loves to arrest Kony. She is ready. Probably Brad will go also.”
The plot apparently involved embedding Jolie and her then-husband Brad Pitt with a unit of U.S. Special Forces soldiers near Kony’s stronghold.
Though the Times acquired an email chain which shows that Jolie seemed somewhat interested, asking to “discuss logistics”, it seems at some point she stopped replying to Ocampo’s emails. We’ve all been there, don’t worry about it.
Jolie has not commented on this particular story at this point. One can only assume her response will be to make a movie about it.
