Amsterdam’s Night Mayor Is Coming To Oz To School Sydney On The Lockouts

Amsterdam‘s Night Mayor, Mirik Milan, has been announced as the first keynote speaker of Sydney’s 2016 Electronic Music Conference – and he’ll no doubt have an opinion or two to share about the state of the city’s nightlife as Mike Baird‘s lockout laws continue to gut its cultural identity.

If you’re wondering what the sweet fuck a ‘Night Mayor’ actually is, it’s a job Milan’s been doing since 2012 and forms part of an independent non-government initiative dedicated to keeping the ‘Dam’s nightlife cranking (and safe) by helping create open channels of communication between business owners, the city council, the mayor, residents and the public.
Milan is set to share the secrets of his city’s successful nightlife policies and suggest ways we can implement similar solutions to save Sydney’s nightlife (and Queensland‘s, which is already suffering after the first weekend of lockout laws).
He’ll also touch on the success enjoyed by other European cities – like Paris, Zurich and Tolouse – that have employed the Night Mayor model, and managed not to totally shaft their cities’ nightlife by doing so.
“We believe Milan’s knowledge and experience will be invaluable in our own city’s pursuit of a vibrant and safe nightlife,” says EMC Programmer Erin Flanagan. “Amsterdam has shown us and the rest of the world that it is possible to achieve this.”
As well as Milan’s keynote, EMC 2016 will offer up a week of Q&As, panels, workshops, master classes, showcases and parties celebrating electro.
It’ll be at Sydney’s The Ivy Complex from November 28 – December 2 and you can get tix HERE rn.
