Melb Indie Band Alpine Issue Statement After Guitarist Was Charged With Alleged Sexual Assault

Melbourne indie band Alpine has issued a statement after the news that guitarist Christan O’Brien was charged earlier this year over the alleged sexual assault of a minor in August 2019.

The remaining members, Phoebe Baker, Ryan LambTim Royall, Phil Tucker and Lou James, said that they’re “deeply saddened and concerned” by the allegations in the released court documents, and have no plans to release or perform as Alpine in the future.

“We are deeply concerned and saddened by these allegations,” the statement reads.

“Any matter of sexual assault is an extremely serious one; however, as the matter is still before the courts, we are advised that we are unable to provide further comment at this time.

“Our thoughts are with those involved and hope all parties have the privacy and support required to deal with this devastating matter. The band disbanded in 2019 and will not be releasing music or playing shows in the future. It is very disappointing to announce this news in this way to our fans.

As per The Age, court documents released in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday revealed that O’Brien was charged earlier this year over the incident, which allegedly occurred on Little Bourke Street in Melbourne’s CBD.

The documents state that after a public appeal was issued by the police to locate O’Brien, he “fled Melbourne to Brisbane in a bid to avoid apprehension”. Authorities also believed that he was likely to also flee Australia to further avoid arrest.

Christian O’Brien is due to appear in court on February 18, where it is expected he will enter a plea for his charge.
