ALP Finally Supports Marriage Equality

What a week for Government support of tolerance and affirmative change in Australia – finally. After the Queensland government made the change to officially recognise civil unions between same-sex partners, now the Labor Party has voted to change its policy to support gay marriage, meaning that we now have a governing body that has had the guts – the decency, really – to do the right thing despite a huge potential for voter backlash.

After a lengthy and passionate debate on the issue at the ALP national conference, currently under way in Sydney, the decision was voted in with the party’s official platform change, announcing: “Labor will amend the Marriage Act to ensure equal access to marriage under statute for all adult couples irrespective of sex who have a mutual commitment to a shared life.”

Get emotional. Feel proud. Today is a good day, Australia.
