Alleged Emu Killer Charged With Multiple Animal Cruelty Offences

Victoria Police have arrested and charged the 20-year-old man allegedly responsible for deliberately running over emus in rural Victoria.

The man faces several animal cruelty charges and traffic related offences.

Victoria Police said in a statement:

[A] Cowangie man has been interviewed and is expected to be charged on summons with aggravated cruelty to an animal, cruelty to an animal, torment to an animal, destruction of protected wildlife and a number of traffic related offences including using a mobile phone while driving and speeding.

The video, believed to be filmed on the man’s phone from between 1 September and 20 September, begins with the driver’s speedometer which displays a speed of 120km/hr.

The man can be heard saying, “Fucking emus… This is fucking great. I’ve got that one too… and that one.”

The man’s actions led to a nation-wide manhunt for his identity and The Australian reports several men were wrongly identified.

As a result, the RSPCA asked people to “Please do not ‘name and shame’ alleged suspects on social media, as this risks both compromising a potential prosecution, as well as possibly identifying an innocent citizen.”

The man is due to face Ouyen Court on November 9.
