Company Behind Potentially Lethal Pet Food Offers To Replace Euthanised Dogs

Pet owners whose dogs have died after eating Advance Dermocare dry dog food will be reimbursed for the purchase of new dogs, the company has announced.

The ABC reports manufacturer Mars Petcare will cover the cost of new dogs for those who can demonstrate their original pets ate Advance Dermocare and died of complications related to megaesophagus, a rare condition thought to be linked to the recalled food.

The company has also pledged to cover ongoing vet bills for those who can establish their dogs fell ill after eating the suspect product.

At least eight dogs have been euthanised in Australia after ingesting the food, and Melbourne University has confirmed 74 cases of megaesophagus in dogs known to have eaten Advance Dermocare.

No direct link between the condition – which enlarges dogs’ oesophagi to the point where they cannot swallow food – and Advance Dermocare has yet been established, but Melbourne University’s Dr Caroline Mansfield said “we do believe that there is an association”.

The investigation is ongoing.

Pet owners who are concerned their dog may experienced adverse effects from the food have been advised to contact their vet and the Advance customer care line on 1800 640 111.
