Adshel Reinstates Rip & Roll Campaign, Tolerance Wins

Congratulations you guys, we did it! Because of the combined efforts of the passionate pro-tolerance public as well as a push by some high-profile talking heads Adshel has reinstated the “Rip & Roll” advertisements (which feature a gay couple) around Brisbane, after having removed them following the discriminatory and homophobic requests by the Australian Christian Lobby.

Yesterday afternoon after an outpouring of public support in favour of the ad, Adshel announced the campaign would be reinstated. Here’s how you helped that happen:

1. In 24 hours 81,285 people had joined the anti-homophobia facebook group set up in protest of Adshel’s actions.
2. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh got behind the community effort by retweeting: “Dear #adshel, thousands of united Australians are stronger than a handful of homophobes. RT if you agree #ripnroll”
3. Brisbane residents organised a peaceful rally to protest the removal of the posters:

4. And hundreds made complaints directly to Adshel requesting the campaign be reinstated.

I’m feeling a rush of lame platitudes coming on along the lines of Many Voices, One Sound and so forth…. but doesn’t it make you feel good inside to know that tolerance prevailed?

Hit it, Snap.
