A Vegan Pie Made By Kiwis Took Out The Gong For Straya’s Top Rat Coffin

We probably should’ve seen this coming.

After years – decades, in fact – of taking the cream of New Zealand‘s crops and claiming it as our own, we had to have known that one day they’d come for one of our near and dear.
But holy hell, not this. ANYTHING BUT THIS.
Our nation’s most sacred and glorious of prizes, far beyond the Australian of the Year award and even more coveted than a Logie, is clearly the annual ‘Australia’s Best Pieaward. On this, I think we can all agree.
Clearly and obviously held by Australian entries throughout the course of its illustrious history, the award has celebrated our greatest invention, and the key to any hungry Aussie’s heart: the humble pie.
But a hostile takeover from across the Tasman has seen the unthinkable occur.
In 2016, the award was summarily won – usurped, if you will – by a KIWI.
The contest, held recently at Melbourne’s Foodservice Australia trade show and backed by the Baking Association of Australia, sees hundreds of entries from around the country vie for the glorious mantle of top pie.
Ka Pies Bakehouse, a Kiwi-owned and operated mob who have an established store in the Melbourne suburb of Sunshine, took their New Zealand-style pies to the contest and flogged everyone to take out the overall award for Australia’s Best Pie.
Not only that, they managed to do so with an offering that was completely meat-free.
Their Thai Vegetable Curry Pie was crowned king of pies, and ranks as the first time a pie sans flesh has taken out the top gong.
The pie sports a traditional-style thai curry made from lemon grass and chillies with fresh cooked veggies and is 100% vegan, for those keeping score at home.
Kiwi-style pies use 100% puff pastry for both the lid and shell of the pie, as opposed to most Australian-style pies, which use puff for the lid and shortcrust for the shell.
Ka’s full bakery menu is choc-full of other ridiculous options that clearly show they know their shiz, like a Butter Chicken Pie, or a Beef Curry Rendang Pie, or even a Lamb Roast Pie and holy shit give me all of them immediately.

Ka Pies co-owner Adrian Apswoude weighed in on the trans-Tasman rivalry, which now has our national dish very much under threat.

Crowded House and pavlova are claimed by Aussies due to them being so good… maybe we’ll give Phar Lap back in place of Ka Pies?”

*through clenched teeth* CROWDED HOUSE FORMED IN MELBOURNE, YOU HEATHENS.

With debate on the subject clearly raging, we canvassed the PEDESTRIAN.TV offices and asked staff to weigh in on the subject.
This is the response we got:
Only the hottest takes here, my friends.
