A School Production Of ‘Sweeney Todd’ Predictably Ended In SRS Injury

See, when you choose the musical for your high school drama class to perform, it’s important to think about a few things:

  • Don’t choose a musical that heavily features razor blades, murder, and cannibalism.
  • That’s all, really.
And if you do decide on a musical that showcases these things, then for the love of theatre, do it safely.
However, a school in Auckland, New Zealand really managed to cock this up.
Two teenage boys were injured on opening night of a school production of ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street‘.
And it’s exactly what you thought: they both reportedly received cuts to the neck.
In case you weren’t aware and didn’t see the Tim Burton silver screen version of the musical ft. Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd is about a fiercely revenge-driven barber, who cuts the throat of his victims under the guise of offering them a straight razor shave. He then, with the help of pie shop owner Mrs Lovett, bakes his victims into pies, which become the most popular pies in London.
Yeah… really.

One sustained serious injuries, while the other received moderate injuries. They are still in hospital this morning, in a stable condition.
Why this was ever decided upon as a high school production is beyond us, but hey – we hope the young fellas are doing okay, and don’t have long-term ingrained fear of shaving from this point onwards.
