A Chill Guide To Melbourne City

Like bread and butter, French and champagne, wine and cheese, and more recently, Andy and Ben from Masterchef, Melbourne and winter just seem to go together.

From laneways full of cosy corners to restaurants that offer the ultimate in comfort food to donning eight layers of polar fleece and watching the AFL from the nosebleed section with meat pie gravy dribbling down your chin, head to Melbourne for one thing this winter, and you’re bound to end up staying for another.

To embrace what’s left of the chilly season, Pedestrian has put together our pick of City of Melbourne’s winter highlights giving y’all a reason to get yourself to the CBD, and plenty more to stay once you’re there.

STAY FOR: Bertha Brown

Full of comfy couches, cosy booths and nestled at the base of the historic Markillies Hotel, Bertha Brown is the perfect place to grab a pre or post show bevvie. Chance of Marty McFly spottings – slim, but as an historic hotel, this is not out of the question.

COME FOR: The Melbourne Writer’s Festival

Come August 23rd, Melbourne will play host to over 300 literary luminaries to fuel your intellect and inspire your imagination. From the most experienced and respected writers (looking at you Tony ‘Silver Fox’ Jones) to bright young sparks making a real contribution to writing (yo, Benjamin Law!), attendance should probably be mandatory.

STAY FOR: The Woolshed Pub

Question: What’s better than listening to your favourite authors and journos wax lyrical about the written word? Answer: Pretending you’re Hemmingway in Paris and drinking red wine/cognac/eau du vie at 2pm in front of an open fireplace. The Woolshed Pub at Docklands offers the perfect place to do exactly that.

COME FOR: Napoleon – Revolution to Empire

Get your French fix this winter with an incredible exhibition that spans the French Revolution, the execution of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette (please let there be a guillotine) and Napoleon and Josephine’s rise to power. Running at NGV right now, until early October – click here for more information.

STAY FOR: Strange Wolf

From France to Berlin (who need’s Europe?), you’ll think you’ve stumbled into a psy-trance nightclub at Strange Wolf – a subterranean bunker complete with mood lighting and 70’s terrariums. Plus, they serve wolf burgers*.

Watch this space over the next few weeks as we catch up with some of our favourite Melbourne pop culture personalities and get their take on the best spots to stake out in Melbourne this winter too.

For more ideas on how you can make the most of Melbourne this winter head to City of Melbourne’s official website.
