A Bunch Of Mates Won The Powerball, & One Ran Off With The Lot

The Age reported today that a Powerball syndicate of colleagues from courier company Toll Group were very upset to find that they had won a huge amount of money, but one of the members had taken off with all the winnings.

The Victorian man in question, Gary Baron, would collect $20 per week from each member since 2009, and purchase their lottery tickets online.
He allegedly took off with $16.6 million. SIXTEEN POINT SIX MILLION DOLLARS
The group said that they figured out what had happened when Baron had quit his job, paid off his mortgage, set up an investment company, bought a $200,000 BMW, and bought a property for his son. (Pretty fair assumption to make, if we’re being honest.)
He allegedly denied winning to all sixteen members at first, but then told one of them that he had received a ‘significant inheritance’.
Baron was angrily confronted by the members of the group, and has now admitted that he was indeed one of the Powerball winners, but won on a separate ticket that he purchased for himself.
Seeing as this is a classic ‘my word against yours’ kind of situation, the group are taking Baron to the Supreme court, because they believe they are entitled to approximately $1 million each.
Hooooo boy. That’s gotta hurt.
