26 Y.O. Impaled On Fence In Cairns Allegedly Trying To Dodge $10 Club Fee

Being rebellious has a price, folks. So does being drunk, and so does being cheap. We’ll let you decide which combination of those stellar options contributed to this story.
A 26-year-old backpacker was impaled and subsequently hospitalised after allegedly attempting to sneak into Cairns nightclub Gilligan’s late Saturday night.
The reportedly “heavily intoxicated” man was staying at Gilligan’s Backpacker Hotel and Resort when he tried to climb a 2.5m high fence next to Fetta’s Greek Taverna, slipped at the top, and received two spiked palings through his right thigh.
And even though this was all several buildings away from Gilligan’s itself, QLD Police Senior-Sergeant John Rhodes believed the backpacker was trying to get sneak in without paying the cover charge — a whopping $10 — and that he was lucky to not have have injured anything more serious:

“He could have lost his whole leg, or it could have struck an artery.

“Apparently, while he was hanging there – and he was in a fair bit of pain – he asked one of the crew whether anyone had Snapchat that he could use.”

After paramedics arrived on the scene and stabilised the guy while he was still stuck at the top, firefighters used the Jaws of Life to cut out a section of the fence and free him.
Finally, after even more of the paling was recut to fit him into an ambulance, the backpacker was sent to Cairns Hospital where the last bit of fence was removed Sunday morning.
He remained in a stable condition at the hospital yesterday, but Sen-Sgt Rhodes reckons he might still be in for some financial pain after involving four police crews, Queensland Ambulance Service and the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service crews:
“He might get the bill for that – the firies might send him the bill.”
Look, we’ve all done v. silly things while drunk, but very few of us have received a comeuppance by way of being actually goddamned impaled.
Give the footage of his timely rescue a squiz below, and party safe my dudes:
