Webby Award nominees

The Webby Award nominations celebrate the best of the Internet and pop culture, which means just to be nominated is a pretty awesome feat considering the infinite competition out there. Made up of almost 70 categories, from art to religion, news and entertainment, sites are judged on their aesthetic, interactivity, usability and functionality. Among the long list of nominees for the 15th Webbys are a few notable mentions:

Chris Milk for his interactive Arcade Fire video, The Wilderness Downtown, which utilises Google Street View technology scored by the band’s song We Used to Wait – Milk received five nominations for this interactive collaboration.

Celeb nominations went to Justin Bieber for his takeover of Funny or Die, titled “Bieber or Die”, Zach Galifianakis for best web personality/host for Between Two Ferns and others including Jim Carey, Will Ferrell, Katy Perry, Bob Dylan, Snoop Dogg and LL Cool J.

A few ‘web-celebs’ who made the list in the best virile marketing category were Antoine Dodson for the auto-tuned Bed Intruder Song, Isaiah Mustafa, i.e. the Old Spice Guy, and the band OK Go for their video This Too Shall Pass.

Not surprisingly, the app Angry Birds scored a nomination for best mobile games category.

All up, The New York Times earned themselves 18 nominations, Funny or Die followed with 14, and Google Creative Lab tallied at eight. In each category two winners are announced: one selected by judges and the other voted for by the public.

Winners will be announced May 3 with an award gala streamed lived in New York on June 13. As you can guess, it’s a pretty big deal.
