Watch Local Legend Courtney Barnett Cover The Breeders For The AV Club’s ‘Undercover’

Safe to say it’s been a banner year already for rapidly rising star Courtney Barnett. A whirlwind tour of the US saw her dual EP release “The Double EPs: A Sea of Split Peas” receive widespread acclaim, propelling her to a performance at the Coachella music festival, and even an appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.
And whilst over in good ole’ seppo land, Barnett swung by the Chicago offices of The AV Club (who if the website was somehow a real person, I would not hesitate for one second to propose swift and thunderous marriage to it) to lay down a video track for their Undercover series.
Undercover, as you’d expect, works in pretty much the same way as Triple J‘s homegrown edition, Like A Version, with the notable exception being that song choice is limited to a pre-determined list, and bands perform fully plugged in as opposed to simply acoustically or toned down.
Barnett chose to rip into a rollicking, faithful cover of The Breeders classic hit “Cannonball” that ended up being every bit as good as the original. No one might be able to hold a candle to the mantle of Kim Deal, but damn it, Barnett comes pretty darned close here.

And as an added little bit of “Name That Band T-Shirt” for those of you painfully patched in to Melbourne indie rock, that’s definitely an East Brunswick All Girls Choir shirt Courtney is repping.
Shit yes.
