Watch Kanye West’s Unfinished “Monster” Video

Let’s begin this year the same way we ended the last, by diverting unhealthy amounts of attention to Kanye West and his necrophilic new video for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy fulcrum and one of our favourite tracks of last year, “Monster”. As hinted at in the teaser clip released last year, the video takes cues from smoky fashion shoots and schlocky horror films and opens with imagery both macabre and slick – models hang from nooses in naught but lingerie and heels while Rick Ross smokes a cigar in a throne.

Read a little deeper and between the “champagne wishes and thirty white bitches” hook on “So Appalled”, the “light-skinned girls” of “Power” and “getting blackmailed for that white girl” on “Blame Game”, you might understand why some have accused West of promoting casual racism by objectifying white women. The decapitated head (White? Check. Female? Check.) West brandishes at the 3:20 mark does little to quell such fears but I’m neither a gender expert nor a hip hop mind reader so I’ll focus instead on Jay-Z’s undying ability to make an entrance, even in a music video, and the false assumption that Nicki Minaj’s presence in this video would be as scintillating as her verse is in headphones (it’s not). Still pretty baller though! Watch below…
