WATCH: Cloud Nothings Turns Coldplay Into A Meme-Fuelled Nightmare Factory

There’s a lot of different ways you can approach performing a cover tune, as a band.
You can stay faithful to the original material, showing respect for the original composition and a love for the tune by playing it as close to the recorded version as you possibly can. Then again you can choose to put your own spin on it, lovingly deconstructing and reinterpreting the song and turning into something new and fresh and wonderful.
Or, of course, you can take the much rarer path of dousing the whole thing in petrol and lighting that sumbitch on fire.
Cloud Nothings, appearing on The AV Club‘s eighth season of ‘Undercover‘, took an absolute axe to Coldplay‘s syncopated arpeggio exercise ‘Clocks.’
And when we say “took an axe to it,” we almost literally mean it.
The band threw all semblance of song structure out the window, beating the tune from pillar to post with cat sounds, fart noises, off-key piano riffs, palm-mashing of keyboards, and inexplicable drop-ins of both Led Zeppelin and Scatman Joe.
Seriously.
Ever wanted to hear what a meme sounds like? This is pretty close.

There’s a solid lesson to be learned here, folks: Sometimes over-preparing is far, far worse than simply not preparing at all.
