Watch Blood Orange’s ‘Champagne Coast’ Video

Dev Hynes (current moniker: Blood Orange) has teamed up with stylist turned director Haley Wollens on the new pastiche-chic music video for ‘Champagne Coast‘. Sampling a pretty scattered mood board of images including artworks from Ed Ruscha (who recently did this) to interior design mags from the 70s to the 90s, as well as real life bedrooms belonging to Flickr-using tweens, the video also features a coterie of ethnically ambiguous babes dancing alone in some pretty multi-dimensional boudoirs.

Speaking with T Magazine, Wollens said the concept of the video came to her while dancing to ‘Champagne Coast’ in front of her own bedroom mirror: “I have always been infatuated with the movement of a woman’s body while dancing. Nothing is sexier. The motif a girl alone in her bedroom is a recurring moment that has often inspired me, in films like Paris, Texas and Bye Bye Birdie, to name two examples. I wanted to represent this iconic scene a new way.”

The visual potpourri of catalogue cutouts is a perfect accompaniment to the retro-pop-kitsch and aural collage of Hynes’ music; a cut-and-paste aesthetic that takes its cues from online virtual reality games and 80s/90s classics like Duke Nukem. It’s made all the more modern by the fact that the two met and collaborated via Facebook. Like!
