Valentine’s Day Special – Passion Pit

Passion Pit’s name alone should alert you to the levels of romanticism that dwell within the bones of brainchild Michael Angelakos…

Considering it’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow I thought it appropriate to post about Passion Pit, a band that formed as a direct result of love. Awwww. The story goes that songwriter/founder/frontman Michael Angelakos wrote and recorded an EP as a belated Valentine’s give for his girlfriend, friends heard it, loved it and convinced Angelakos to get a band together and re-record the material. The result is Chunk Of Change an EP brimming with the unbridled euphoria of the best Valentine’s Day you’ve ever had with the person you love most.

These guys are often compared to the breakout act of ’08 MGMT, which is fair enough. The two bands share similar sonic territory and both exhibit a fantastical youthful exuberance that belie their age. After all a little optimism is what the world needs now. However, the key difference between the two lies in the complete emotional transparency of Angelakos. And that’s in no way a bad thing, in fact it’s refreshing. He’s the kind of Wayne Coyne heart on your sleeve frontman – skrawky falsetto bringing an emotional immediacy long before the melodic hooks set in. And there are hooks a plenty. And sequenced drums. And the voices of children. And it is fucking rad.

Now excuse me while I write an anthology of poetry for my girlfriend – flowers and chocolate just don’t cut it anymore.
