16-year-old George Alice has scooped the 2019 Triple J Unearthed High competition, earning her school an extremely sneaky surprise visit from Triple J Breakfast hosts Ben and Liam.

The South Aussie teen learned about her big break at Tanunda’s Faith Lutheran College, when the radio guns interrupted what appeared to be a stock-standard school photo session.

It’s best you peep the footage for yourself.

That’s all well and good, but it’s her lush musicianship which got her there in the first place. Her tune Circles is a hit of the roomy, RnB-tinged pop you’d expect from the likes of Banks or Billie Eilish. Don’t take our word for it, though: George Alice lists Billie’s brother/producer Finneas as a key influence, along with Yaeji and Julia Jacklin.

The win means she’ll cop a solid slab of Triple J airtime and the opportunity to perfect some of her tunes at ABC Radio’s Adelaide studio, joining Unearthed High alumni including Japanese Wallpaper, Gretta Ray, and ASTA. Good gear!
