Triple J’s Requestival Day 1 Programming Is Proof Everyone’s Just Gone Full Gremlin This Year

triple j requestival 2021 day one

We’re headed towards the last hours of Day 1 of the second annual Triple J Requestival – a full five days of requests on the national youth broadcaster – and we’ve all really hit the Cooker Mode button hard. It is the very first day and it’s already gone sideways in the best way possible.

Chaos Week 2021 kicked off this morning at 6am, and all you early birds got treated to the theme song for The Avengers. What else is going to make you feel more superhuman at the butt-crack of dawn on a late autumn morning? Nothing, that’s what.

As the day progressed, the gremlin energy just got stronger and stronger. Lucy Smith played the whole seven-minute cut of Céline Dion‘s It’s All Coming Back To Me Now straight after Shaggy‘s Mr. Boombastic.

I nearly swerved off the road in Moonee Ponds.

Illegal. ILLEGAL.

We’ve had nostalgia whiplash from tracks like Big Brovas‘ Nu Flow and Holly Valance‘s Kiss Kiss and slapped by Kirk Van Houten‘s glove of love with Can I Borrow A Feeling? It’s been a day.

I don’t know about you but I’d clean forgotten how much the Bratz songs absolutely slap until So Good got a spin just before midday. Truly, that track goes harder than it has any right to whatsoever.

Bratz dolls have no feet! Who gave them the right to go this hard!

Hell, even The Duck Song, yes THAT one from YouTube viral fame back in 2009, got a run today. To which I simply must ask: hey, got any grapes?

When we thought the pandemonium couldn’t go any deeper, get any more cooked, push any further into chaos mode, Lewis Hobba and Michael Hing turned the heat up this arvo and kicked a torp straight into the hornets nest by playing the Geelong Football Club song.

Seriously asking for trouble doing this, mates. Sure, Sweet Caroline (a.k.a. the unofficial Sydney Swans song) might have played earlier today, but what about the rest of the league? Where’s the Essendon club song? Where’s Big Big Sound? You’ve made some powerful enemies here today, arvo crew.

But the bracket that really sold me that Requestival is very much in full swing? It’s absolutely the back to back of Boney M‘s Rasputin into Teriyaki Boyz‘ Tokyo Drift.

Legit, this:

Backed up with this:

Totally floored me. Just knocked my head clean off my shoulders.

It is day one, and this is the pure cookery we’ve brought upon ourselves.

Bring on Requestival day two, and a whole new day of requesting one (1) pure heater on the Triple J app.

Oh, hurry up and play Weird Al Yankovic‘s Albuquerque already, you cowards.
