Triple J morning hosts Ben & Liam tasted their own medicine when big boss Lachie Macara got the lads back for waking him up at six in the bloody morning.
Long story short: Ben & Liam thought it’d be a brilliant idea to treat their boss – their new boss – to a Wake Up Call at 6:15am. The call happened, Macara copped a sudden onslaught of Evanescence‘s Bring Me To Life, and Ben & Liam were momentarily pulled off air.
But not before Macara delivered the words: “Yes I’d just like to apologise for this segment and ah… come see me in my office at 9.”
WOOF.
When the boys returned viewers were met with a sheepish: “Everyone is cool here, not to worry,” and “Some slackers can’t handle the heat when it comes to the Wednesday morning Wake Up Call.”
Yeah, cool.
Quite fairly, boss man Macara got his ~ revenge ~ with the help of music producer Belle Jackson and music director Nick Findlay.
The gist? Tell the boys they have the world exclusive interview for Kendrick Lamar‘s new song.
“We’ve been talking with his team for months now, don’t fuck it up,” Findlay says.
The ‘interview’ is set for 6am the next morning on a Saturday, the boys rock up at 5:35am.
And then a goddamn pre-recorded interview begins.
“Hey Ben and Liam, we have Kendrick here and we’re ready to go,” the ‘press minder’ says.
Liam is straight onto it, “Kendrick Lamar! Good morning!”
Kendrick-but-not-Kendrick replies, “Yeah, man.”
Liam’s face exactly translates to ‘What the fuck but alright’ and he keeps going.
“So new music this morning from you, is this the first taste of a new album?”
Kendrick-but-not-Kendrick says, “That’s a great, that’s a great question um I always said to myself – WAKE ME UP INSIDE, WAKE ME UP INSIDE, CALL MY NAME AND SAVE ME FROM THE DARK.”
Liam’s shoulders drop, he knows but BEN, BEN SAYS, “Uh, hey Kendrick” until Macara’s voice – dripping with victory – informs the two that they’ve been had.
“Goooooooood morning Ben and Liam, this is your boss Lachie and this is your Saturday morning wake up or should that be payback? But oh wait, you don’t actually think I’m on the phone do you? Like we’re not having a conversation, I pre-recorded this yesterday. Why would I be up on 6am on a Saturday, I’d prefer to be sleeping to be honest.
“Anyway, have a great weekend and swing by my office on Monday morning.”
