Tkay Maidza Reveals Her Top 5 Fave Bops To Freshen Up Yr Playlists

Tkay Maidza is known for her top-tier bops and seriously fun vibes at her live shows, blasting track after track of actual bangers that are so good it’s actually illegal to not dance to them. It’s actually against the law to not dance when ‘Switch Lanes comes on. Sorry I don’t make the rules, I just heartily enforce them.

But what inspires Tkay to move? PEDESTRIAN.TV got the Aussie singer and rapper to give us the tea on some of her fave tunes that are copping heavy rotation in her headphones.

Mo Bamba – Sheck Wes

I’m addicted to this song, its super simple and is a great time. It just sounds like freedom and what it feels like to be our age. I love it.

For fans who like: Travis Scott.

Move Me – Mura Masa ft. Octavian

I’m a huge fan of both of these artists, it’s the perfect summer & winter vibe and is so practical to listen to in so many environments whether it’s a quiet one or a party one. The writing in this song is so simple it’s inspiring.

For fans who like: Cosmo’s Midnight, Flume, and anything chill dancehall.

Sicko Mode – Travis Scott

I’ve been such a massive fan on Travis Scott since days before Rodeo, and this song really feels like a rollercoaster. He’s always pushing boundaries and I feel like this is such a dope representation of where has at.

For fans who like: Drake.

I Wish I Missed My Ex – Mahalia

The songwriting in this is so inspiring – I love how articulate she intricate her lyrics are. It’s also such a timeless song, I can’t get enough of it!

For fans who like: Lauryn Hill, Jorja Smith, Erykah Badu.

Fake ID – Riton & Kah-Lo

A must-have for the dance playlist! Such an addictive song!!

For fans who like: Azealia Banks and house music.

Now that we know what Tkay’s blasting while she’s either getting ready for a party night or wanting to get super inspired (legit that Riton & Kah-Lo track fkn SLAPS), I asked some of my workmates about what they’ve been blasting over the last few weeks. Prepare to add these to your respective playlists, there’s some seriously good shit in there.

Topdown – Channel Tres

Channel Tres is super chill. Something about his voice, it’s smooth. Like dark chocolate smooth. Like WSFM Smooth. It reminds of a house party with your mates. You are past the dance-dance phase and you need something a little more mellow to bring you down. This. is. it.

Just give it a listen. ‘Jet Black‘ has a great beat that kicks in. It’s dark and seedy and I love it.

I’m An Individual – Bachelor Pad

Super catchy, bright and energetic pub-pun-rock (??) coming out of Sydney, the team from Bachelor Pad has just dropped an EP full of tracks that kinda make you want to bop around and run with high knees around inc circles with your friends. I can already smell the beer flying everywhere while ‘I’m An Individual‘ blasts out over the speakers.

The group just played a huge set at King St Crawl over the weekend on the I Oh You! stage, and their sound definitely encapsulates those sticky warm afternoons in summer in the front bar of a divey pub with a crisp, cold schooey.

Session Add – Skee Mask

Skee Mask‘s whole record Compro is both incredibly sad and alone, and incredibly beautiful all at the same time. Each track feels really unique, has a variety of different synths and sounds to it, and some of the percussion is so insanely crisp that it hurts. It’s used sparingly too, which makes it feel all the more special.

A more sentimental reason I love it was I just came home from a month-long stint overseas and a good friend of mine recommended it to me while I was over there. I spent the whole trip listening to the record over and over again, and I’ve really held onto the memory of it. I’d say this is kind of like a mix between Four Tet and Burial. I’d also say it reminds me of rain and cold weather, but maybe those are different questions entirely.

Some people might listen to a few seconds of this and be like “ah I don’t really know the point of this is.” I know that this might not be the kind of music people usually listen to, but I really really implore you to try the whole thing, at least once. I think you’ll be really pleasantly surprised with how you come out of it.

Pressure – Georgia June

This track gives off a feel-good vibe, that makes you want to have a bit of a bop before work/school getting ready to deal with the day ahead of ya. Reminds me a lot of Alex Lahey and Ruby Fields, and it takes me back to the end of high school, with all the high expectations of exams and uni applications etc.. feeling like you’re lost and all over the place, ahhh those ~nostalgic youth anxieties~.

NONSTOP – The Kid LAROI.

https://youtu.be/Vy9jlg7lvFE

The Kid LAROI is legit so good! Super young indigenous kid from Redfern, kind of Drake/Post Malone vibes. Chasing his dream and his lyrics are actually real for a 15-year-old. Huge stuff from this legend.

What’s The Deal With David? – Oh Pep!

There’s no denying that indie-pop is having a hot minute in Aus at the moment, and Oh Pep! are probably one of the duos that are head and shoulders above the rest. Solid Phantastic Ferniture/Julia Jacklin vibes with a definite lean into alt-folk, it’s genuinely a refreshing sound that will help you shake off the cold grip of winter and blossom brilliantly into spring.
