The Warmest 100 Is Back And Its Number One Prediction Is Pretty Predictable

Blue Is the Warmest Colour and spoilers are the Warmest 100, the site created by Nick Drewe, Tom Knox, Andy Thelander and Jack Murphy (with a little help from their friend Cameron Lowe) to have a crack at predicting the annual Triple J Hottest 100 countdown.

To formulate last year’s Warmest 100 Nick Drewe and his crew aggregated 35,081 votes made public by 3,602 voters and shared via social media, and they used that sample of votes as an indication of how the official list would play out – to impressive accuracy.

The Warmest 100 prediction rate (based solely on whether the song would be present anywhere on triple j’s list) was 92% accurate, with 92 songs appearing on both the Warmest and Hottest 100s. The accuracy of the Warmest 100’s predictions pertaining to the exact spot where each song would fall on the poll wasn’t consistent across the entire list, however there was still an impressive amount of crossover – as you can see in the comparison of the Top 20 songs of 2012:

So, if you’re not looking to have your ‘straya Day countdown foretold, maybe don’t keep scrolling…

The lads said of the site and their process this year: “voters were unable to share what they’d voted for directly on social networks. In spite of this, a number of you have taken to Twitter and Instagram to post screenshots of the songs you voted for – Thanks!”

Their predictions for 2014 are a collection of about 17,800 votes from 1,799 voters, meaning a smaller sample size (1.3% of the expected total vote) than they had last year, which may impact the Warmest 100 track record of spot on’edness.

For 2014 there are, as always, quite a few noteable Aussie inclusions scattered across the list, including (in no particular order) Flume, RÜFÜS, Cloud Control, Empire of the Sun, Andy Bull, Vance Joy, Matt Corby and Flight Facilities. Voting has now closed, so after 1.4 million votes and 1.4 billion pleas for voting favour, Australia has decided and Australia Day will reveal all.

Or you could always just head to the Warmest 100.
