The Sydney Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Sydneysiders

Glossy-faced arbiter of European kitchen appliances, the(sydney)magazine, have published their annual list of Sydney’s 100 most influential citizens. Let’s take a look shall we?

This year’s compendium of influence is divided into ten different categories – breakthroughs, a thing of beauty, the altruists, making it happen, provocateurs, show me the money, with these hands, green machines, bright ideas and the stayers – but for the purposes of this article we’ll break it down via industry.

“Entertainment” boasts multiple entries with nods to Oscar winning producer Emile Sherman, Red Dog director Kris Stenders, Shire polymath Brendan Cowell, novelist turned filmmaker Julia Leigh and Oscar nominated actress Jacki Weaver. “Fashion” is represented by Indhra Chagoury and Jeremy Somers of retro-inspired swimwear brand We Are Handsome, plus-sized model Robyn Lawley, and industry unto himself, Alex Perry, who is this year recognised for securing lucrative endorsement deals, being Alex Perry, and for the ubiquity of his luminous dome on Australia’s Next Top Model and Project Runway Australia.

From “media” are overdue nods to Community Channel video blogger Natalie Tran and Sydney cultural champion, Jess Scully, a woman whose CV includes founding and editing SummerWinter, managing the Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards, curating Vivid Creative Sydney and serving as policy adviser to the NSW Minister for the Arts. She’s 31 by the way. Elsewhere, The Jezabels win praise for pioneering a non existent genre called “intens-indie”, Jaime Wirth is charged with starting a Sydney pub renaissance and Ben Quilty is honoured for taking out the Archibald then traveling to Afghanistan as an official artist for the Australian Defence Force.

People really are amazing.
