The Bennies Covered TISM For Like A Version, And It Was Genius

Like a Version – Triple J‘s Friday morning institution – presents the opportunity for bands to get a little weird with things and drag out a favourite song of theirs. Most of the time, it’s perfectly serviceable. A song from their own personal history admirably handled by a group of reasonably skilled musicians. But sometimes, just sometimes, a band drops in with a track that simply fits – it feels like it belongs; it makes perfect sense; damn it, it’s right.

This morning, Melbourne legends The Bennies dropped by the studios for a quick chat with Matt & Alex, before ripping through a balls-out, stone cold hit.
Their choice of song? “(He’ll Never Be An) Ol’ Man River” by the almighty TISM. Genius.
To top that off, they even aped TISM’s trademark anonymous headgear by turning a bunch of Smith Street Band beanies into balaclavas. Check it out.

I love this so hard and it’s for two primary reasons. The first being that, although it is still February, with enough momentum there’s now the potential for a TISM track to appear in next year’s Hottest 100, where they rightfully belong each and every year.
The second being that there’s at least the minor possibility that this track will wind its way into a Bennies set list at some point in time, and that makes me endlessly happy.
Happy Friday, friends.
