Splendour In The Grass 2014: The Highlights And Lowlights So Far

Not all of us are lucky enough to actually be at Splendour In The Grass this weekend. However, for those whose life choices have led them (JUST FOR EXAMPLE) to be huddled over a laptop while wearing a hoodie covered in potato chip crumbs, it’s been pretty easy to follow along with the festival thanks to streaming and social media.
There are still two nights of the festival to go, and some big acts still to play, but already, some highlights have started to emerge, both on and off stage. For those experiencing Splendour vicariously through the magic of the internet, what follows is a highly definitive and scientific listing of the highlights and lowlights of the festival so far:
HIGHLIGHT: Peking Duk Inviting Half Of Splendour On Stage With Them

There have been nothing but good reports about Peking Duk‘s Friday set at the Mix Up Stage, during which they were joined by various guests, from 360 to Yeo, Kite String Tangle and SAFIA.
LOWLIGHT: The Annual Splendour Traffic Jam
Sitting in a humongous traffic snarl outside the festival and feeling like an extra from a zombie movie is a time-honoured Splendour tradition. Still looks as annoying as ever.
HIGHLIGHT: This Photo Of Andre 3000 Surfing

Presented without comment.

LOWLIGHT: Whatever Happened Before Violent Soho’s Set

Seems like a lot of people wanted to get in to see Violent Soho
This happened, however, so things can’t have been too hectic.
HIGHLIGHT: Childish Gambino Closing The Mix Up Stage Friday Night
It certainly looks like Donald Glover had the crowd eating from the palm of his hand.
LOWLIGHT: When Nina Las Vegas Was Blamed For The Death Of Live Music
A representative of management company The A&R Department posted and then quickly deleted an angry status update accusing DJ Nina Las Vegas of destroying live music in Australia by muscling live bands out of the arena. Las Vegas gently but firmly pointed out that she’s a huge supporter of live music; they apologised and backed off.

HIGHLIGHT: Outkast’s Storming Friday Night Set

A reunited Outkast played a headline set Friday night, opening with a storming ‘Bombs Over Baghdad’. While there have been some reports that Andre 3000 and Big Boi are not very friendly with each-other or the crowd, consensus seems to be that they looked and sounded good.

HIGHLIGHT: Ball Park Music’s Cover Of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’

Ball Park Music are known for chucking the odd stirring ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ cover into their sets, as the video above will attest, but they still brought the house down with their joyous rendition of the Queen classic.

LOWLIGHT: Police Seizing Large Quantities Of Drugs

As we reported earlier today, police at the festival have already seized more than a kilogram of “cannabis, pills and powders.” That’s a not insignificant collection of cannabis, pills and powders. Stay safe, everyone.

HIGHLIGHT: Sky Ferreira Owning The Mix Up Stage

Mid-afternoon Saturday is not the best time to rock the dance tent, but the general consensus is that pop tearaway Sky Ferreira killed it with her set.
With Lily Allen yet to say or do something outrageous tomorrow night, Chvrches still to charm the crowd and City And Colour to step in for Two Door Cinema Club, there’s still a lot of Splendour action to come. Check back with us tomorrow for even more.
